I have spoken to many people with Diabetes over the years and there seems to be a lot of people who are to worried to go travelling because of many different issues but the main one being Airport security. Which is where this has been inspired from. For your information I am currently using a Medtronic Veo pump, a Libre and a Miaomiao. I may not be doing the correct thing and I don’t advise you to follow me but when I go through security I follow the same rules as everyone else e.g. remove liquids and put them in the plastic bag. I don’t do anything extra special for my diabetes unless I go through the scanner and beep and need a physical search, then I tell them I have an insulin pump. Majority of the time this results in a swab for explosives and I’m on my way.
Gatwick to Luxembourg – May 2019
Straight through security, no questions asked and I didn’t even set off the metal detector.
Luxembourg to Gatwick – May 2019
At Luxembourg airport I was wearing two Libres as one was about to finish and they were both visible on my arms. I went through security and the metal detector buzzed. I asked why that was and they confirmed it was for a random explosive test. They swabbed my clothing and did the explosive test and I was on my way.
Stanstead to Ciampiano – June 2019
Standing in the queue at Stanstead I was about to walk through the metal detector and I noticed two security guards staring at me. Then I realised they were looking at my insulin pump that was on my jeans and clearly visible. I mentioned that it was an insulin pump as I was going through the metal detector and she yelled out to a colleague ‘It didn’t go off but she has an insulin pump and needs to be swabbed’. They swabbed if for explosives and I was allowed to go through.
Ciampiano to Stanstead – July 2019
With my Insulin pump visible on my jeans i was able to walk straight through security wit no questions asked and no checks of my luggage etc.
Gatwick to Antalya – September 2019
I’m not sure if Gatwick airport has better security scanners, if there staff are educated better or if it’s the complete opposite but every time I go through their security I go straight through without having my bags pulled apart and without being pattered down. Probably one of my favourite airports to travel from if I’m going to Europe. And yet again this time straight through no questions asked.
